Let's be honest: adulthood sucks the life out of you to the point that all you want to do during your free time is to sleep or rest.
That's exactly what I feel right now.
"Morning," I lazily greeted as I got up.
"Oh, wow. Unbelievable. You're up early today," Alex said while placing his food in the microwave.
"I have an experiment to observe. The incubation time is six hours."
I left the common room and went to our laboratory to check my experiment. The crystals were slowly forming and it seemed like the conversion was going smoothly.
I opened my locker and pulled out a fresh shirt, jeans and undergarments. With my clothes on one hand and toiletries on the other, I marched toward the shower room to get ready.
The coffee's aroma filled the room and uplifted my spirit. Ah.
And he immediately ruined my morning.
"O, bakit ang sama mo makatingin?"
"Kasi pinaalala mo pa."
I sighed heavily while looking at my coffee. Thinking about meeting my high school batchmates already made me mentally exhausted. Not that I don't want to see them but social gatherings always drain my energy.
"I'm not."
Mari, Shan and I had been together since we were in high school. I wasn't close to them initially but since we all got into the same course in the same university, we depended a lot on each other. We became closer when we started working in the same research building. Thankfully, we were in different laboratories.
Good luck."
I rolled my eyes at him but he just smirked as he sipped from his cup of coffee. Ugh. Why did he have to remind me about that goddamn reunion?
After having our breakfast, we returned to the laboratory to resume our work. I kept myself busy, trying to finish my experiment and two progress reports at the same time. It had been a long time since I was this focused on my work. I wanted to continue working while I was still in my productivity zone, but I got distracted when I saw Mari and Shan in our lab.
"And aalis na tayo in ten minutes."
"Fine. Fine," I muttered. May magagawa pa ba ako kung bantay-sarado nila akong dalawa?
Alex looked at me with a sly grin on his face.
"Masaya ka na niyan?" I asked, glaring at him.
"Oh, yes, your torment is my amusement," he retorted.
I rolled my eyes at him as I marched toward the sink. I heaved a sigh as I packed my things. Bakit ba kasi kailangan pang mag-reunion?
Mari and Shan were busy with their phones so I cleared my throat to catch their attention.
"Tara na ba?"
Shan immediately stood up and beamed. "Tara! Excited na ako!"
"Sus, kasi makikita mo ulit si Stephen?"
The three of us booked a car to Kaira's house. I suddenly remembered how our batch would always go to their home whenever we needed a place to practice for a group or class project since it was just a walking distance from our high school.
I could hear familiar voices and names, and nostalgia suddenly hit me.
"Hoy, Shanna! Mari Ann! Marigold! Oh my god, long time no see!" bati ni Kaira nang pagbuksan niya kami ng gate at bumungad sa amin ang mga mukha ng high school classmates namin.
The anxiety I felt a while ago gradually dissipated and was replaced by wistfulness and vivid memories from high school.
It's been ten years since I last saw some of them. Never na kasi akong umattend ng mini-reunions after our graduation.
We were once just teenagers who wanted to survive high school. Now, were adults who are trying to survive the real world.
That moment, a single voice silenced the noise around us, but after a few seconds, the people who heard him erupted in cheers.
"Uyyy! Muling ibalik ang tamis ng pag-ibig~" they teased as they sang that familiar line.
"Naks, nagbabalik ang isa sa loveteams natin!"
"Team MagiCal pa rin mga gago!" MagiCal, huh?
Ten years later, it seemed like we were still awkward toward each other because of our situation way back in high school . . .
"Hi, Magi," he greeted with a smile. "It's been a while."
. . . or not.
Right. We're adults now. Maybe it's time to forget about the silly things that happened back then. I smiled back. "Hello, Callum. Yup. It's been ten years," sagot ko.
Back in high school, we were teased to each other and became a ridiculous loveteam because of our classmates. We couldn't even talk to each other or be at the same place without getting awkward or embarrassed.
Today, we met again, but this time, as adults and professionals. And little did I know, this unexpected turn of events would have a huge effect in my life soon.
