Chapter 2

10/20/2023

Comments

Nostalgia hit me and suddenly, my tears were threatening to come out.

“Kyle . . .” I muttered.

I remembered that day when we were just running around the field, doing silly things and eating different street food. That day when those men robbed him his life.

“You can use this—!”

“You . . .” I said while pointing at him. It was that guy.

We stared at each other, long enough for it to be awkward. I turned at the side and I was reminded by the time I was informed of Kyle’s death after the operation. A girl lent me her handkerchief even when she also needed it.

“You’re that girl . . Maybe because they both did the same gesture to me. “Anyway, here.”

Miley is working as a researcher at the same university where she graduated while finishing her Master’s degree. . . dahil sa nangyari.

I can still remember and feel the pain I had suffered after Kyle’s death. I hated myself to the point that I wanted to die, too. I stopped coming to the university and my parents had to apply a leave of absence so that I can rest for a while. My mother had to be with me every night because I would always scream and cry. In the end, they had no choice but to bring me to her trauma specialist colleague in the States.

The people there helped me a lot and after five years, I became better. After getting my college diploma there, the next thing I thought was returning to Philippines.

I tried really hard to control my tears, to show him that I’m now okay, but I failed.

“Oh my gosh! Sorry, I spaced out,” I confessed and she just smiled.

I’m actually an assistant manager in a clothing line in Los Angeles and I requested for a break but my boss didn’t grant it. Instead, she told me that while I’m here, I should review the materials she’ll be sending via email.

I was really relieved that after all those years of having no contact, there was no awkwardness between us.

“So, bakit ka ba nakatulala do’n sa park? I thought you’d be here since madadaanan ‘to bago makapunta sa university.”

“You know . . .” I gave her a melancholic smile. “I . . . I just remembered him.”

“Sabi na nga ba. Well, that’s normal,” sabi naman niya.

“Guy? Who?”

“The guy who brought me to the hospital.”

“Ah! Talaga? Saan?”

Pagkasabi ko no’n ay nanliit ang mga mata niya, a sign that she wasn’t buying my story.

“Bakit, may sinabi ba akong hindi?” she said with a teasing smile. “So, after that?”

“Bigla na lang siyang nawala, eh. Hindi ako nakapag-thank you, and I didn’t get his name. Now I have another handkerchief from a stranger.”

After a few minutes, Miley began talking again.

“In fairness, parang laging nagku-krus ang landas n’yo,” sabi niya.

“Agad? Three times lang,” sabi ko naman.

“Three? Wait, first was at the cemetery. Second was a while ago. Kailan ang third? Or should I say, kailan nangyari ang second since mukhang third ang ngayon?”

I heaved a sigh and told her what happened when I got discharged.

“You mean, bumalik siya para sa journal?”

“Yeah. . . wait . . .

“Sus, hindi mo naman—”

“Andrew . . .” I uttered, remembering that single name in the entry.

“What?”

“His name. That guy’s name. He’s Andrew.”

“Wha—wait, how did you know that?”

“Naalala ko ‘yong nakasulat do’n sa journal. The one who wrote it was talking about him.”

“I thought it’s his journal? Teka, nalilito ako.”

“No. Babae ang nagsulat—oh my gosh.”

“Bakit na naman?”

Realization finally hit me. That day at the cemetery . . . his expression . . . the journal . . . it’s that girl’s journal, the person beside Kyle’s grave.

Kris Leila Asuncion.
